Eight Crazy Nights (2002)

Adam Sandler and director Seth Kearsley present an animated Hanukkah tale with ADAM SANDLER’S EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS. Davey Stone (Sandler) is lurching down a wayward path. He’s a drunk and aging delinquent, infamous in Dukesberry for spreading misery as deftly as he belches full sentences. He’s facing prison when Whitey Duvall (Sandler again), a lovable, physically challenged man, proposes that Stone work with him at the community centre as a referee for the local basketball league. The surly Stone accepts the job, and moves in with Whitey and his twin sister, Eleanore (also voiced by Sandler). But the true test is whether Stone can rise above his self-destructive habits in order to reunite with his former girlfriend, Jennifer (Jackie Titone), and act as a role model for her young son, Benjamin (Austin Stout).
The snow-covered landscapes in EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS have a pleasing, three-dimensional realism that’s as cheerful as a Hallmark holiday card. Sandler, with his wide range of inane, high-pitched voices, is as funny as ever, punctuating the innocent world of EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS with the refreshingly irreverent brand of humour he displayed in HAPPY GILMORE, THE WEDDING SINGER, and BIG DADDY. Though the film isn’t really for kids, Sandler and Kearsley manage to make even the more daring animated characters–like one with three breasts–seem harmless.

Bruce Willis plays Jeff Talley, a traumatized ex-LAPD hostage negotiator whose new career as small town sheriff doesn’t turn out to be as restful as he had hoped; a hostage situation breaks out on ‘low crime Tuesday’ and he is thrown right back into the business he knows all too well. Some punk kids have shot a cop and are holed up in a local mansion inhabited by crooked accountant Walter Smith (Kevin Pollack), his two kids, and a lot of surveillance cameras. Walter’s young son (Jimmy Bennett) escapes his bonds and reports to Talley from the air shafts via his sister’s cell phone. The sister–a Goth teen played by Michelle Horn–draws the romantic attention of Mars (Ben Foster), the pot-addled sociopath in the gang, thus adding a unique twist to the damsel-in-distress factor. Meanwhile, amid the buzzing helicopters and mobilizing SWAT teams, another group of bad guys has kidnapped Talley’s wife and daughter, in order to force him to retrieve a secret disc in Walter’s study. Florent Siri’s efficient direction keeps the action flowing in unexpected directions while allowing for plenty of interesting procedural details and sly bits of humour. The score is ominous and the performances are strong, with Foster memorably creepy and Willis excellent as the frightened hero.
