Umrao Jaan (2006)

The real wealth of people is their culture and literary work. Which reflects the times, the place and the people. One such work was Mirza Hadi Ruswa’s Umrao Jaan Ada. Ruswa was a teacher in mathematics, science, philosophy & Persian. Ruswa was born in 1857 in Licknow and his parents died when he was 16 years old. ‘Ruswa ` means a person without reputation. After going through the book, many literary minds felt that Ruswa could have named it ‘Kahani Avadh Ki` or ‘ Sham-e-Avadh’ , because it is a vivid depiction of life in Avadh. But then, ‘Sham-e-Avadh’ or ‘An Evening in Avadh’ means ‘mehfils’ of song and dance and gatherings of poets and the literati – a veritable celebration of life And any such evening would be inconceivable without the presence of Umrao Jaan Ada. A courtesan and a poetess in her own right, Umrao Jaan was a name to be reckoned with in any description of life in Avadh. If Lucknow was the heart of Avadh. Umrao was the heart beat..

Not Another Teen Movie (2001)

In his feature film directorial debut, Joel Gallen spoofs the ever-popular teen genre. The students of John Hughes High School live the plot lines of numerous teen flicks, including SHE’S ALL THAT, AMERICAN PIE, TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU, VARSITY BLUES, and SIXTEEN CANDLES, to name just a few. The most popular boy, Jake Wyler (Chris Evans) has bet his friends that he can make Janey Briggs (Chyler Leigh)–the poor, smart girl from the wrong side of the tracks–prom queen. Meanwhile, her little brother is in pursuit of the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen when he’s not getting into trouble with his geeky friends. Of course, a teen movie wouldn’t be complete without a mean-spirited cheerleading captain, a lovestruck best friend, and a foreign exchange student, all of whom have prominent roles in the film. Throw in a few guest appearances from familiar faces from some of the best-known teen movies of the 1980s, along with remakes of songs from the same films–and even some word-for-word dialogue–and you have an amusing walk down memory lane for anyone who has a soft spot for THE BREAKFAST CLUB, CRUEL INTENTIONS, and PRETTY IN PINK.

This subversive film is helped along by an all-star cast including Jack Nicholson in dual roles as both a clueless U.S. President (with First Lady Glenn Close) and a Las Vegas sleazebag. The film follows the wacky WAR OF THE WORLD–like proceedings from the points of view of numerous colorful characters, from the inane U.S. Press Secretary (Martin Short) to a trailer-park family (Lukas Haas and Sylvia Sidney), singer Tom Jones (as himself).

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)

Based on a series of books by Patrick O’Brian, and directed by Peter Weir, MASTER AND COMMANDER plunges viewers deep into the story of a British Navy ship at sea during the Napoleonic war. Russell Crowe stars as Aubrey, the charismatic captain who wrestles with issues like honour, pride, duty, sacrifice and loyalty while using ingenious tactics to engage his prey–a much larger and better-equipped French Man o’ War. Paul Bettany plays his friend, the ship’s doctor, who cautions Aubrey about letting revenge cloud his judgement after the French Man o’ War almost sinks them in an early battle. Before the incredibly intense final skirmish the men battle a raging storm, launch an excursion to the Galapagos Islands, find time for grog-enhanced merriment, and endure some primitive surgery. Weir fills the film with a rich wealth of period detail, convincing dialogue and the same haunting, dreamlike mood that has informed his best films, like PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK, THE LAST WAVE and THE TRUMAN SHOW. The wealth of sounds and sights on display are so evocative one can practically smell the salt air and feel the heave of the ocean beneath their seats. Russell is intense and inspiring as Aubrey and Bettany proves a worthy match. MASTER AND COMMANDER is another triumph for Weir, and further evidence of his ability to fuse poetic realism with rousing entertainment.

Machuca (2004)

The film is not intended to provide an overview of this period in Chilean history. Rather, it shows the perspective of Gonzalo Infante, a privileged boy who catches a glimpse of the world of the lower class through Machuca, at a moment when the lower classes are politically mobilized, demanding more rights and forcing fundamental change. At the same time the upper classes, including Gonzalo’s own family, grow fearful of the growing socialist movement and plot against the country’s elected president, Salvador Allende. Infante’s sympathies, however, clearly lie with the poor based on what he has seen. When the military coup d’état is launched which brutally represses poor and activist Chileans, including his friends and Father McEnroe, his own class status comes into relief. Moments after witnessing the murder of a poor, young girlfriend by soldiers clearing a shantytown, Infante is nearly arrested himself. He pleads with the soldier to recognize that he does not belong to this shantytown. The soldier is only convinced after noticing Gonzalo’s expensive sneakers. Thus, Infante is forced to abandon his friend, using his class status as a free pass.

At the end of the movie, his family moves into a new, more opulent home. The audience is meant to understand, along with Infante, that this new wealth is connected to the brutal repression of the Chilean masses, who had hoped for real societal change by attempting to create a socialist society.
