Wolcott is confronted by Ellsworth for snooping around Alma Garret’s gold claim. Doc Cochran tells Al that his situation is critical and that they have to act, giving him the unpleasant options he has to choose from. Commissioner Jarry comes into camp bearing news about the gold claims. Wolcott informs Tolliver about the new Chinaman in town with whom he will do business.

Francis Wolcott, agent for the mining magnate George Hearst arrives in Deadwood. Al’s condition severely deteriorates from his kidney stones. Enclosed in his room and unable to speak nobody knows about the bad state he is in though, thinking he is simply ignoring them. Farnum tries to con Wolcott by lying about the contents of Hickok’s letter. Alma tells Ellsworth that she plans on buying the Grand Central Hotel. Meanwhile rumors start spreading that Deadwood’s gold claims might be invalid.

Gob and Buster team up for some magic tricks with the help of Buster’s fake hand, but when Tony Wonder, a rival magician, starts to mentor them, somebody gets the finger. Meanwhile, Michael is forced to delegate some work when he’s hospitalized and Lindsay teaches George Michael how to drive using the staircar.

In the aftermath of the fight, Al enquires about Seth’s condition. Meanwhile, the Sheriff is concerned about his future with Alma, not knowing what he should do now that his wife and son have arrived in camp. At the same time he is determined to return to Al, to recover his badge and gun. Charlie Utter tries to delay Bullock, fearing the outcome. Joanie and Maddie begin work on the Chez Ami and Calamity Jane returns to camp.

Lucille abducts George Michael for a mother-son dance; Buster adjusts to having a hook for a hand; Gob reunites with his estranged wife; Tobias stars as George Sr. in a biopic about the Bluth family, which causes Lindsay to become more attracted to him.

This well-made thriller harkens back to the gritty crime films of the 1970s. Bruce Willis plays Jeff Talley, a traumatized ex-LAPD hostage negotiator whose new career as small town sheriff doesn’t turn out to be as restful as he had hoped; a hostage situation breaks out on ‘low crime Tuesday’ and he is thrown right back into the business he knows all too well. Some punk kids have shot a cop and are holed up in a local mansion inhabited by crooked accountant Walter Smith (Kevin Pollack), his two kids, and a lot of surveillance cameras. Walter’s young son (Jimmy Bennett) escapes his bonds and reports to Talley from the air shafts via his sister’s cell phone. The sister–a Goth teen played by Michelle Horn–draws the romantic attention of Mars (Ben Foster), the pot-addled sociopath in the gang, thus adding a unique twist to the damsel-in-distress factor. Meanwhile, amid the buzzing helicopters and mobilizing SWAT teams, another group of bad guys has kidnapped Talley’s wife and daughter, in order to force him to retrieve a secret disc in Walter’s study. Florent Siri’s efficient direction keeps the action flowing in unexpected directions while allowing for plenty of interesting procedural details and sly bits of humour. The score is ominous and the performances are strong, with Foster memorably creepy and Willis excellent as the frightened hero.

Just as Michael’s relationship with Sally starts to flourish, Maggie Lizer returns nine months pregnant, and Michael immediately assumes he’s the father; also, George Michael attempts to break up with Ann, and Buster learns he’s being deployed to Iraq.

Silas brings Al bad news about the new division of the hill country. In the meantime a shooting at Tom Nuttall’s saloon requires the Sheriff’s presence. Insulted by Swearengen and in defence of Alma’s honor, the latter and Seth Bullock engage in a violent fight. In the meantime a stagecoach with the Sheriff’s son and wife, as well as some friends of Joanie Stubbs, comes into camp.
